Castle in the Clouds
Moultonborough, New Hampshire

The Lucknow mansion was built by Thomas Plant in 1913 to last for centuries. This majestic home features walls of granite stone from the mountain itself, a landmark Spanish red slate roof with a gentle Oriental slope and various structures of English, Norwegian, Swiss chalet and Japanese design.
Most unusual are Mr. Plants' self-devised household appliances, practically unheard of at the time: a centralized intercom system, central vacuum system, self-cleaning oven, porcelain clothes washing basin and a clothes drying chamber!
On the way up, you pass by a large boulder - nicknamed "The Pebble" - and a nice short hike to a waterfall (bring the bugspray). On the way out, do stop at the fish pond to see the largest trout you've ever seen (well, the largest I've ever seen anyway). They don't allow fishing, and for a quarter, you can feed the fish (or the ducks, if you like). These are some well-fed fish!
Castle in the Clouds is open weekends & holidays in May, then daily starting mid-June through mid-October - 9am to 4:30pm.
Admission prices have changed from the website (they've gone down!) - Adults $10, Youth (7-18) $5, Seniors $8.
